Both a Local and Family Historian of many years standing, John has lived in Southgate since 1969, although he has had connections with the area for far longer. Now retired, he has had much involvement with both Local and Family History (which he used to teach) for over 45 years, and has written one book on Family History, has a very successful family history website, and has undertaken research in the UK, Australia and New Zealand besides in and around Gower.
His last major project concerned the history of Marmaduke Matthews (one time vicar at Penmaen before he went to New England in the 1600s, and then back to Swansea where he was vicar at St.Johns, High Street), although over the years he has also undertaken detailed research into;-
the History of the Parish of Oystermouth
the Bible College of Wales
Seventeenth Century Puritanism in Swansea and Gower
19th century Copper trade in Chile
Seventeenth Century Charities
An Early Trader/Politician in Australasia
A Norfolk family c1196-2007
- whilst he has also researched the history of Rose Hill (now St. Anne’s Hotel), Mumbles, undertaken searches for early Coaling Stations of the South Atlantic, and now has the bit between his teeth for the ‘modern’ (post-1920) history of your Village and area.
Consulted by Historians and Universities throughout the world on various matters - University of Auckland, NZ having a great interest in his research into a British Trader who made such an impact on that Country) during the 1800s - John (who gained his Dip.L.H. at UCoS in 1989) currently has an interest in the post-1920 history of Kilvrough and its Estate in Gower, and of the post-1920 Auction and subsequent development of its surrounding Villages.
Having undertaken detailed research over several years for matters within the area bounded by this website, it was felt that information gained should not just be put to one side, but rather built upon to create a foundation not only for a website, but also (hopefully) at some time in the near future, both a Pennard & Area Local History Group or Society, as well as a publication on the area's 'modern' history.
The Villages of modern-day Ilston, Kittle, Parkmill, Pennard and Southgate through their residents, memories, photos, other mementos and so much more, together with the 'wealth' of Deeds, Documents, and other Records which have either been deposited in Local and National Archives or have been retained within private hands, bear witness to a history which needs to be explored, researched further and shared with the current generation and the generations to come.
There is far too much information available for just one person to delve into, hence the need for not only this website, but also for the creation of a body of persons willing to spare time and energy recording not only the written words but also the verbal memories of those still with us.
Will you participate and make this Project successful? I look forward to hearing from you and for your input. Thank you.
