 Southgate County Club
An Introduction
The Club was formed by local residents in the mid Twenties.
The ethos of the Club being to have a convenient place for refreshment at reasonable prices.

The original building was an old cowshed, and amenities were basic, but it was well
patronised and flourished.
At the time the Pennard area was predominately agricultural and quite labour intensive.
There was the addition of casual labour from Swansea and surrounding areas to help with
whatever needed harvesting. This enabled the amenities of the Club to be improved over the
ensuing years.
An Explanation
During the early Fifties, when Swansea Docks was still active, seamen coming ashore for
“rest and relaxation” came to Southgate for a change, away from the ship and Dockyard
environment. A somewhat multi-national mix of clientele then developed..

This scenario brought about the occasional altercation and the Club obtained the sobriquet
“The Bucket of Blood”
With the decline of the Docks, and general social changes, this element disappeared, but,
over half a Century later the name still lingers,
An Invitation
Our Village has changed and we have seen a decline in agricultural activity and a quadrupling of
the local population
We at the Southgate County Club would like to feel that, as a focal point of the Village, the ethos
of the Founding Fathers can be continued.

An invitation is extended to all residents of the Village to become members, for a modest
Annual subscription, and avail themselves of the facilities on hand.

In collaboration with Coastline Catering we are utilizing our well appointed kitchen to
accommodate the current requirement for dining facilities in licensed premises.
The objective is to make the Club a family friendly environment that can be enjoyed by all.

The facilities are there to cater for receptions for Christenings, Birthdays, Weddings
Funerals or whatever.

The Club can be at the heart of the community, with dining facilities, family area,
entertainment and usual Club activities.
You are welcome to visit and look around, and application forms for Membership are available
behind the bar.
